SCRANTON -- The room at Allied Services in Scranton was packed with kids and filled with anticipation Tuesday night.

The eighth annual Operation Dear Santa was put together to help Friends of the Poor by the Young Lawyers Division of the Lackawanna Bar Association.

“This is a night of pure fun and pure joy and what better way to spend an evening than with a bunch of children that are getting gifts from Santa?" said Jennifer Menichini, president of the Young Lawyers Division in Lackawanna County.

There were 82 kids at the party, ages 4 to 12. They got snacks, a craft, a book, and each got a present from Santa.

“It's good that they did this. Arts and crafts and eat pizza and stuff,” said Mercedes Santiago of Scranton.

Then the moment came, when the man in red made his announcement to open the gifts.

After tearing into their gifts, there were lots of smiling faces.

“I'm gonna make cookies in the oven!” said Jeyshilz Pedraza of Scranton excitedly holding a small oven.

Those taking part in Operation Dear Santa said this is what Christmas is all about.

“It's just the best thing I could think of. It's my favorite thing about Christmas. When they open up their presents and they see their new books and their new toothbrushes. I've never seen so much happiness in one room. It's just so much spirit!" said Emily Marquadt of Clarks Summit, who volunteers at the event each year.
